Summary
Headache as a presenting symptom is commonly encountered by the emergency department (ED) physician. The differential diagnosis of headaches is extensive and the etiologies can range from benign to life-threatening. These patients can pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the treating clinician. This chapter encapsulates the clinical approach, appropriate evaluation, and treatment options in patients presenting with the complaint of headache.

The last interglacial, commonly understood as an interval with climate as warm or warmer than today, is represented by marine isotope stage (MIS) 5e, which is a proxy record of low global ice volume and high sea level. It is arbitrarily dated to begin at approximately 130,000 yr B.P. and end at 116,000 yr B.P. with the onset of the early glacial unit MIS 5d. The age of the stage is determined by correlation to uranium–thorium dates of raised coral reefs. The most detailed proxy record of interglacial climate is found in the Vostok ice core where the temperature reached current levels 132,000 yr ago and continued rising for another two millennia. Approximately 127,000 yr ago the Eemian mixed forests were established in Europe. They developed through a characteristic succession of tree species, probably surviving well into the early glacial stage in southern parts of Europe. After ca. 115,000 yr ago, open vegetation replaced forests in northwestern Europe and the proportion of conifers increased significantly farther south. Air temperature at Vostok dropped sharply. Pulses of cold water affected the northern North Atlantic already in late MIS 5e, but the central North Atlantic remained warm throughout most of MIS 5d. Model results show that the sea surface in the eastern tropical Pacific warmed when the ice grew and sea level dropped. The essentially interglacial conditions in southwestern Europe remained unaffected by ice buildup until late MIS 5d when the forests disappeared abruptly and cold water invaded the central North Atlantic ca. 107,000 yr ago.

Educators in ecological agriculture are developing learning environments that differ in three fundamental ways from conventional teaching in agricultural universities and colleges. First, increased emphasis on food and production systems will expand and complement the current focus on specific disciplines and technologies. Second, introduction of research methods and learning objectives from social sciences will broaden the potentials for students to understand the complexities of food systems and the people who make them work. Third, action research and education will move learning activities into the agroecosystems environment and the human landscape, where students will learn from a broad array of people and experiences. This design of a new learning environment will enhance the education of students to serve agricultural and food systems well into a future that is changing at an accelerating rate.

Summary
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis has undoubtedly received more psychobiologic scrutiny than any other endocrine axis. Historically, one rationale for the intensive study of adrenocortical function in patients with primary psychiatric disorders was the observation that patients with primary endocrine disorders such as Addison's disease or Cushing's syndrome exhibited a higher than expected psychiatric morbidity. The most intensive scrutiny of the HPA axis has been conducted in patients with major depression. Cushing's syndrome, due to prolonged exposure to excessive Cortisol or other related glucocorticoids, is accompanied by psychiatric symptoms of anxiety and/or depression that generally remit with diminution of abnormal glucocorticoid concentrations. Despite the higher incidence of depression in women than men and the purportedly increased occurrence of depression during and after menopause, the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis has received relatively little scrutiny in patients with mood disorders.

Summary
Ideas about poetry changed almost completely during his time, Sainte-Beuve wrote in 1866: the poetic ideal of a ‘most finished and beautiful work, the most clear and pleasant to read’ had given way to the desire for a poetry offering ‘the greatest latitude to [its] reader to imagine and to dream’. Quoting him Margaret Gilman noted that between the beginning of the eighteenth century and Sainte-Beuve's time ‘the conception of poetry changed from that of embellished statement to “suggestive magic”, to use Baudelaire's phrase’. ‘Merely decorative allegorization’, as Paul de Man pointed out, using the terms of Wordsworth's reproach to Pope, came at the end of the eighteenth century to be seen as inferior to the ‘imaginative use of figural diction. Meanwhile the term imagination steadily [grew] in importance and complexity in the critical as well as in the poetic texts of the period’. A ‘profound change in the texture of poetic diction’, often taking the form of greater concreteness, was paradoxically accompanied by the increasingly metaphorical structure of poetic language and ‘the image – be it under the name of symbol or even of myth – [came] to be considered as the most prominent dimension of the style’.
French literary criticism of the second half of the eighteenth century manifests a tension between, on the one hand, an uncompromising neoclassicism in its most characteristic dogmas and, on the other, frequent expressions of opinion that sound very unclassical. Some of the most original literature of the period is ‘pre-romantic’ in both subject and manner.

Lilienfeld and Lilienfeld have defined epidemiology as “the study of the distribution of a disease or physiological condition in human populations and of the factors that influence this distribution.” Epidemiology is an eclectic discipline, utilizing statistics, sociology, and biology of the study of disease populations. Epidemiological studies can help explain the etiology of a specific disease; they can evaluate the consistency of epidemiologic data with etiological hypotheses and provide a basis for developing or evaluating preventive procedures and public health practices.
The consultation for the Development of International Guidelines for Epidemiological Research and Ethical Review Procedures assembled in Geneva in November 1990 offered basic principles that should apply to epidemiological and clinical research. The principles provide the basis for discussion here.
Providing protection for the rights and welfare of two categories of research subjects in epidemiologic research must be a matter of serious concern to those who design, conduct and disseminate findings of epidemiological research.

A decorated pottery vessel excavated at the Cahokia site in southwestern Illinois is believed to be a specimen from the southeastern United States. A megascopic and a petrographic analysis are presented to confirm a southern origin. The megascopic analysis suggests that the vessel is of Caddoan derivation. The petrographic analysis demonstrates that the paste of the vessel is not indigenous to the American Bottoms and suggests the use of weathered Tertiary shale deposits from the lower Mississippi River Valley. Both analytical procedures are required in order to assess adequately the sources of origin for suspected foreign pottery specimens in archaeological sites.
